This week we have a high school running team staying at the lodge. They were looking to do some night hiking and I told them I'd love to take them. We headed up fireroad 2n08 with a nice half moon providing additional light. We could see our shadows in the moonlight! I headed off into the forest on one of my favorite secret trails.
Everyone was scared of bears and ghosts. I told them that the most dangerous creature out here is probably rattlesnakes, and there aren't very many of those up at this altitude.
When I looked back it was great to see a procession of 35 people hiking along in the forest, enjoying themselves to the max!
We ended up at the top of Snow Forrest which is a ski resort behind the village that closed in the 1980s. There is a nice clearing and a view of the lake. I told them how Big Bear was discovered and named by settlers in California. It was a steep descent back to the village but a good time was had by all.
So grab some water, a flashlight w/ extra batteries and hit the trail after the sun goes down. Night hiking in Big Bear is safe and the temperatures are cool.
